بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Verse 1 - Surah Al-Alaq: 5 words

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

Recite in the name of your Lord who created -

ٱقْرَأْ iq'ra Read
بِٱسْمِ bi-is'mi in (the) name
رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord
ٱلَّذِى alladhī the One Who
خَلَقَ khalaqa created

Verse 2 - Surah Al-Alaq: 4 words

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

Created man from a clinging substance.

خَلَقَ khalaqa He created
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ l-insāna man
مِنْ min from
عَلَقٍ ʿalaqin a clinging substance

Verse 3 - Surah Al-Alaq: 3 words

ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ

Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

ٱقْرَأْ iq'ra Read
وَرَبُّكَ warabbuka and your Lord
ٱلْأَكْرَمُ l-akramu (is) the Most Generous

Verse 4 - Surah Al-Alaq: 3 words

ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ

Who taught by the pen -

ٱلَّذِى alladhī The One Who
عَلَّمَ ʿallama taught
بِٱلْقَلَمِ bil-qalami by the pen

Verse 5 - Surah Al-Alaq: 5 words

عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

Taught man that which he knew not.

عَلَّمَ ʿallama Taught
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ l-insāna man
مَا mā what
لَمْ lam not
يَعْلَمْ yaʿlam he knew

Verse 6 - Surah Al-Alaq: 4 words

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ

No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

كَلَّآ kallā Nay
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ l-insāna man
لَيَطْغَىٰٓ layaṭghā surely transgresses

Verse 7 - Surah Al-Alaq: 3 words

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ

Because he sees himself self-sufficient.

أَن an That
رَّءَاهُ raāhu he sees himself
ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ is'taghnā self-sufficient

Verse 8 - Surah Al-Alaq: 4 words

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ

Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

إِنَّ inna Indeed
إِلَىٰ ilā to
رَبِّكَ rabbika your Lord
ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ l-ruj'ʿā (is) the return

Verse 9 - Surah Al-Alaq: 3 words

أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ

Have you seen the one who forbids

أَرَءَيْتَ ara-ayta Have you seen
ٱلَّذِى alladhī the one who
يَنْهَىٰ yanhā forbids

Verse 10 - Surah Al-Alaq: 3 words

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ

A servant when he prays?

عَبْدًا ʿabdan A slave
إِذَا idhā when
صَلَّىٰٓ ṣallā he prays

Verse 11 - Surah Al-Alaq: 5 words

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

Have you seen if he is upon guidance

أَرَءَيْتَ ara-ayta Have you seen
إِن in if
كَانَ kāna he is
عَلَى ʿalā upon
ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ l-hudā [the] guidance

Verse 12 - Surah Al-Alaq: 3 words

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ

Or enjoins righteousness?

أَوْ aw Or
أَمَرَ amara he enjoins
بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ bil-taqwā [of the] righteousness

Verse 13 - Surah Al-Alaq: 4 words

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

Have you seen if he denies and turns away -

أَرَءَيْتَ ara-ayta Have you seen
إِن in if
كَذَّبَ kadhaba he denies
وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ watawallā and turns away

Verse 14 - Surah Al-Alaq: 5 words

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

Does he not know that Allah sees?

أَلَمْ alam Does not
يَعْلَم yaʿlam he know
بِأَنَّ bi-anna that
ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah
يَرَىٰ yarā sees

Verse 15 - Surah Al-Alaq: 6 words

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ

No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock -

كَلَّا kallā Nay
لَئِن la-in If
لَّمْ lam not
يَنتَهِ yantahi he desists
لَنَسْفَعًۢا lanasfaʿan surely We will drag him
بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ bil-nāṣiyati by the forelock

Verse 16 - Surah Al-Alaq: 3 words

نَاصِيَةٍۢ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍۢ

A lying, sinning forelock.

نَاصِيَةٍۢ nāṣiyatin A forelock
كَـٰذِبَةٍ kādhibatin lying
خَاطِئَةٍۢ khāṭi-atin sinful

Verse 17 - Surah Al-Alaq: 2 words

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ

Then let him call his associates;

فَلْيَدْعُ falyadʿu Then let him call
نَادِيَهُۥ nādiyahu his associates

Verse 18 - Surah Al-Alaq: 2 words

سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ

We will call the angels of Hell.

سَنَدْعُ sanadʿu We will call
ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ l-zabāniyata the Angels of Hell

Verse 19 - Surah Al-Alaq: 5 words

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩

No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].

كَلَّا kallā Nay
لَا lā (Do) not
تُطِعْهُ tuṭiʿ'hu obey him
وَٱسْجُدْ wa-us'jud But prostrate
وَٱقْتَرِب ۩ wa-iq'tarib and draw near (to Allah)

God and His angels shower their blessings on the Prophet. O believers, you should also send your blessings on him, and salute him with a worthy greeting.
