Who are the ten promised Paradise?

The "ten promised Paradise" is the well-known designation given to ten eminent Companions whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ testified would enter Paradise in a single comprehensive hadith. They thus received this glad tidings during their lifetimes. All were among the earliest converts to Islam and among the Muhajirun, and most belonged to Quraysh. Because of their lofty rank, scholars devoted particular attention to them. Ibn al-Athir mentioned them in Usd al-Ghabah fi Ma'rifat as-Sahabah, Ibn Abd al-Barr in Al-Isti'ab, and Ibn Hajar in Al-Isabah fi Tamyiz as-Sahabah.

The hadith that names them together

At-Tirmidhi reported from Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Umar is in Paradise, Uthman is in Paradise, Ali is in Paradise, Talhah is in Paradise, Az-Zubayr is in Paradise, Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf is in Paradise, Saad ibn Abi Waqqas is in Paradise, Said ibn Zayd is in Paradise, and Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah is in Paradise." At-Tirmidhi reported it and graded it hasan. A similar promise is established in the hadith of Said ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, reported by Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi, in which the Prophet ﷺ named nine and Said himself was counted as the tenth.

The names of the ten promised Paradise, in order, with a brief account of each

Abu Bakr As-Siddiq: the first Rightly Guided Caliph, the first man to believe, and the Prophet's ﷺ companion in the cave and during the Hijrah. Umar ibn al-Khattab: Al-Faruq, the second caliph; lands were conquered during his rule, and he was inspired and rightly guided. Uthman ibn Affan: Dhun-Nurayn, the third caliph; he united the Muslims upon one written copy of the Quran and equipped the Army of Hardship. Ali ibn Abi Talib: the Prophet's ﷺ cousin and husband of his daughter Fatimah, the fourth caliph, and one of the earliest Muslims. Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah: the Prophet ﷺ called him "Talhah the Good"; he shielded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his hand at Uhud. Az-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam: the devoted disciple of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and son of his paternal aunt Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib. Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf: one of the wealthy and generous spenders and one of the six members of the consultative council. Saad ibn Abi Waqqas: the first to shoot an arrow in the cause of Allah, conqueror of Iraq, and one whose supplications were answered. Said ibn Zayd: among the earliest Muslims, husband of Umar's sister, and present at every major campaign except Badr. Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah: the "trustworthy man of this Ummah" and commander of the conquests in the Levant.

The rank and virtues of the ten promised Paradise

The ten combined immense virtues: among them were the four Rightly Guided Caliphs and the members of the consultative council to whom Umar entrusted the choice of the caliph. All were among the earliest Muslims, and most witnessed Badr and the Pledge of Ridwan. They spent their wealth and gave themselves in support of the religion, so the promise of Paradise was the fruit of their sincerity and precedence, may Allah be pleased with them.
