The Battle of Uhud
The Battle of Uhud took place in Shawwal of the third year after the Hijrah, near Mount Uhud to the north of Madinah. Quraysh set out seeking revenge for those killed at Badr with around 3,000 fighters, while the Muslims numbered about 700. They were tested when the archers disobeyed the Prophet's ﷺ command and left their positions in pursuit of spoils. The polytheist cavalry then attacked them from behind, and around seventy Companions were martyred that day.
The martyrs of Uhud and their leader Hamzah
Foremost among the martyrs of Uhud was Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him, the Prophet's ﷺ paternal uncle and foster brother. The Prophet ﷺ called him the "Lion of Allah" and the "leader of the martyrs." Other martyrs included Musab ibn Umayr, the standard-bearer, Abd Allah ibn Jahsh, and others whose memory the Quran and Sunnah immortalized. Regarding the steadfastness of the Companions that day, Allah revealed: "Among the believers are men true to what they pledged to Allah" [Al-Ahzab: 23].
Lessons and teachings
Coming after the victory at Badr, Uhud was a trial that distinguished the ranks and reaffirmed the obligation to obey the Messenger ﷺ and follow his command. Allah reproached the believers with a merciful reproach, strengthened them, and revealed verses from Surah Aal Imran concerning the battle.
