Who are the Ansar?

The Ansar were the Companions of Madinah from the Aws and Khazraj tribes, originally from Yemen. They were called the "Ansar" because they supported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muhajirun after believing in him, pledging allegiance to him, sheltering him in their homes, and sharing their wealth with their emigrant brothers.

The Pledge of Al-Aqabah and the bond of brotherhood

The conversion of the Ansar began with the first and second Pledges of Al-Aqabah at Mina, where a group among them pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ upon faith and support. When he ﷺ migrated to Madinah, he established brotherhood between the Muhajirun and the Ansar. An Ansari would share his wealth and home with his Muhajir brother in an unparalleled display of selflessness.

The virtues of the Ansar

Allah praised the Ansar in His Book: "And those who were settled in the home and embraced the faith before them love those who emigrated to them" [Al-Hashr: 9]. The Prophet ﷺ also enjoined that they be treated well, saying: "Love for the Ansar is a sign of faith, and hatred for the Ansar is a sign of hypocrisy." Agreed upon.
