The Muhajirun: Emigrants from Mecca to Medina

The Muhajirun were the first believers who left Mecca for Medina to preserve their faith and follow the Prophet ﷺ. Their migration required them to abandon homes, property, and family ties for the sake of Islam.

Who are the Muhajirun?

The Muhajirun were the Companions who emigrated for the sake of Allah, leaving their homes and possessions in Makkah to preserve their religion. They were the earliest believers, foremost among them the Rightly Guided Caliphs and most of the ten promised Paradise.

The migrations to Abyssinia and Madinah

The first Muslim migrations were to Abyssinia to escape the persecution of Quraysh. They were followed by the great migration to Madinah, which became the starting point of the Islamic calendar. Some Companions took part in both migrations and thereby attained a twofold distinction.

The virtues of the Muhajirun

Allah mentioned the Muhajirun first and praised them: "The first and foremost among the Muhajirun and the Ansar, and those who followed them with excellence, Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him" [At-Tawbah: 100]. He also said: "For the poor Muhajirun who were expelled from their homes and their possessions, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure" [Al-Hashr: 8].
