The Haa of the feminine on which one stops by the taa

The taa of the feminine: verb and noun

The taa of the feminine is either in a verb or in a noun.

If it is in a verb, it is written with the open taa (ta maftoohah), according to the agreement of the scholars. On this, stopping is done on it only by the taa, as in the words of the Most High: وَأُزْلِفَتِ الْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ ¹, وَدَّتْ طَائِفَةٌ ² and وَقَالَتْ لِأُخْتِهِ قُصِّيهِ ³. It is then called taa at-tanith (the taa of the feminine), for it serves to indicate the feminine of the doer.

If it is in a noun, the original rule and the most common usage is that it be written with the taa marbootah and pronounced as such, and stopping is done on it by the Haa. That is why it is called Haa at-tanith, like: rahmah, ni'mah, jannah, with no difference between the rasm of the Uthmani masaahif and the rasm of ordinary writing.

The 2 categories

There are, however, in the Uthmani masaahif words that departed from this rule and were written with the open taa; stopping on them is then done by the taa, in case of shortness of breath or in a context of teaching or examination, in accordance with their rasm in the mushaf, as a taa. And they are of two categories.
