Some scholars of tajweed have mentioned numerous names (alqab) for types of madd, and not all of them fall outside the types we have cited of the two kinds of madd: the original (asli) and the secondary (far'i). We will content ourselves with mentioning the most important of these names as far as the recitation of Hafs is concerned, and we say:

The first: the madd silah

This takes place at the connection (silah) of the ha' of the pronoun by which the absent singular is designated: the one bearing a dammah is connected by a waw, and the one bearing a kasrah is connected by a ya'; it is a type of the types of the madd asli. The scholar al-Dabba' mentioned in the book "Al-Ida'" that the madd silah is that which follows the meem of the plural in the case of the one who reads it with connection ¹.

The second: the madd tamkin

It is a delicate madd of the length of two harakat, brought in an obligatory manner to separate the two waws like: آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا ¹, or the two ya's like: فِي يَوْمَيْنِ ², for fear of idghaam or of deletion; it is considered a type of the types of the madd tabi'i ³.

Some have said: it is every double ya' whose first is mushaddad maksur and the second saakin, like: حُيِّيتُمْ ⁴, النَّبِيِّينَ ⁵. It has been called madd tamkin because it comes out firmly (mutamakkin) because of the shaddah; according to the two views, it is a type of the types of the madd asli ⁶.

The third: the madd 'iwad

It takes place when stopping on the tanween nasb, like: أَفْوَاجًا ⁷: one then recites an alif in place of the tanween ⁸. The scholar al-Dabba' said in the book "Al-Ida'": it is that which follows the ha' of the pronoun preceded by an apocopated verb that has lost its last letter, like: Its ruling is the madd of the length of the munfasil if a hamzah is found after the ha', and it is estimated tabi'i if no hamzah comes after it ¹¹.

The fourth: the madd ta'zim

This takes place like: لا إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ ¹², in the case of the one who shortens the munfasil for this meaning, and it is not permitted to Hafs except by the way of the Tayyiba. It is also called madd mubalaghah (of exaggeration). Ibn al-Jazari mentioned in an-Nashr the statement of Ibn Mahran in the book "Al-Maddat": the madd mubalaghah was so named because it is a seeking of exaggeration in the negation of divinity to everything other than Allah, the Most Pure ¹³.

The fifth: the madd farq

It is the alif brought in place of the connecting hamzah in: آلذَّكَرَيْنِ ¹, آللَّهُ ², آلْآنَ ³, in the case of the substitution by the long madd. It has been so named for the distinction between the question and the information ⁴. It is part of the divisions of the madd lazim kalimi muthaqqal or mukhaffaf.
