The Virtue of Reciting the Noble Quran

Among the noblest acts of worship and the greatest means of drawing near to Allah, glorified and exalted be He, is the recitation of the Noble Quran: the Most High commanded it in His saying فَاقْرَأُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ¹ (Recite what you are able to of the Quran).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) also commanded it, in what Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: "اقرءوا القرآن فإنه يأتي يوم القيامة شفيعًا لأصحابه" ¹ (Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions).

He (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) further informed of the great reward and the immense wage that Allah has prepared for the reader of the Noble Quran, in what 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: "من قرأ حرفًا من كتاب الله فله به حسنة والحسنة بعشر أمثالها لا أقول 'الم' حرف ولكن ألف حرف ولام حرف وميم حرف" ² (Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah earns a good deed by it, and the good deed is rewarded ten times its worth: I am not saying that 'الم' is a letter, but alif is a letter, laam is a letter and meem is a letter).

His prayers and his peace also made clear that whoever beautifies his recitation of the Quran, brings it to excellence, masters it with ease and acts upon its rulings holds the rank of the angels brought near, in what the Mother of the Believers 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: "الماهر بالقرآن مع السَّفَرة الكرام البررة، والذي يقرأ القرآن ويَتَتَعْتَعُ فيه وهو عليه شاقٌ له أجران" ³ (The one who recites the Quran with mastery is with the noble, honored and righteous scribes; and the one who recites the Quran with difficulty, stumbling over it and for whom it is hard, earns two rewards).

Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, further makes clear to us in the clear Book that those who persevere in the recitation of the Quran through the night and at the ends of the day, who act upon its rulings and guard against offending it, Allah grants them the reward they deserve and multiplies their wage by His grace.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said, in the hadith reported by Muslim: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلاةَ وَأَنْفَقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ سِرًّا وَعَلانِيَةً يَرْجُونَ تِجَارَةً لَنْ تَبُورَ، لِيُوَفِّيَهُمْ أُجُورَهُمْ وَيَزِيدَهُمْ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ إِنَّهُ غَفُورٌ شَكُورٌ ⁴ (Those who recite the Book of Allah, establish the prayer and spend, secretly and openly, out of what We have provided them, hope for a trade that will never perish, so that He may pay them their wages in full and increase them out of His bounty. He is All-Forgiving, Most Appreciative).

And there are many other verses and hadiths that set out the virtue of reciting the Noble Quran and establish the great merit and the immense wage that the one who recites it holds with Allah, the Almighty and Majestic.
