The dower of the like (mahr al-mithl) is the dower due to the woman when no valid dower has been designated for her. The jurists detailed its cases: those on which the schools agree, those over which they differ, then the situations in which the designated dower lapses entirely, and finally the remission and the gift of the dower by the wife to her husband.
