📖 2 min readIn the Mejelle (art. 147): they are the countables between whose individuals and units there is no difference in value, all of them being fungibles (al-mithliyat). Al-'adid: he who has no group of ten, joins a clan and counts himself among them; one says he is of the count of the sons of so-and-so and in their number, that is, counted among them. Al-'udda (with damma): readiness; what one prepared against the times' accidents, of money and weapons (plural 'uddad). Al-'idda (with kasra): the amount of what is counted and its sum; in the Qur'an: 'the month of Ramadan... whoever of you witnesses the month shall fast it; who is ill or on a journey, an equal number ('iddatun) of other days; God desires ease for you... and that you complete the count (al-'idda)' (al-Baqara, 185). The group, small or many. The divorced woman or one whose husband died: the days of her peers, and the days of pregnancy after the husband; in the Qur'an: 'O Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them for their waiting period ('iddatihinna) and count the period (al-'idda)' (at-Talaq, 1). The grammarians said: the lam in 'li-'iddatihinna' means 'in', that is, in their waiting period (plural 'uddad); the woman is 'a waiting one ('idda)'. In the Law: a waiting period binding the woman or the man when its cause exists (al-Haskafi). In technical usage: a waiting period binding the woman upon the ending of the marriage or its like (at-Tamartashi). Al-ma'dud: any counted number, small or great.
