Fungible wealth (mithli): (see root m-w-l). Al-mathula: punishment and exemplary penalty; plural: mithlat; in the Quran: "They hasten you toward evil before good, though exemplary punishments have passed before them: your Lord is full of forgiveness for people despite their wrongdoing, and your Lord is severe in punishment" (al-Ra'd 13:6): the punishments of their likes among the deniers, do they not take heed? Mujahid and Abu 'Ubayda said: al-mathulat: the proverbs and similitudes, and the meaning would be: like the days of past nations. Al-muthla: cutting an animal's limbs, or some of them, while it lives; with the Zaydis: causing death otherwise than the lawful manner, striking the nape in humans, or slaughtering or sacrificing in beasts; and it is the addition after death: cutting the nose, the ear, or other. Al-mithil: the like; plural: amthal. The Magians (majus): a people who worshipped the sun, the moon and fire; this name was given them from the third century CE; the word is Persian.
