Definition Amr bil-ma'ruf

Amr bil-ma'ruf according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

Guidance to the saving orientations, and forbidding the blameworthy: reproving what suits not in the Law. Said: ordering the right is ordering what accords with Book and Sounna, forbidding the wrong forbidding what soul and passion incline to. Said: ordering the right points to what pleases Allah of acts.

Amr bil-ma'ruf according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

I ordered the right, that is, good and benevolence. Ibn al-Athir said: ma’rouf is a collective name of all known of obeying Allah, drawing near Him, benevolence to people, and all the Law commends of fair deeds and forbids of ugly. It is among the prevailing attributes: known among people, who disapprove it not at sight. Ordering the right, in the faqihs’ terminology: ordering the following of Mouhammad and his religion from Allah; ma’rouf’s root: all known, fair to do, not ugly to faith’s people, its doing not disapproved.
