Definition Aqam

Aqam according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

In a place, in the form i qama: to dwell in it and make it one's residence; he is muqim. The thing: to maintain it. To establish it in the fullness of its right. In the Quran: [al-Hajj, 78: 'And perform the prayer and give the zakat and hold fast to Allah; He is your protector: an excellent patron and an excellent helper.'], meaning to attend to its rights and bounds. Allah the Most High never commanded prayer where He commands it, nor praised it where He praises it, except with the expression of the i qama, to indicate that what is intended by it is the fulfilment of its conditions, not the mere performance of its forms. The Law: to manifest it and act by it. The wall: to rebuild it and maintain it. For the prayer: to proclaim it. The rows in prayer: to straighten them and complete the first and then the first, closing them up.
