📖 2 min readIrtafaq by him: to benefit from him; to seek his aid; to lean upon him. Arfaqahu: to be gentle with him; to benefit him. Ar-rufqah: companionship; the group of travel companions (plural: rifaq). Ar-rifqah: gentleness, accompaniment. Ar-rafiq: gentle of manner; one says: he is rafiq with him; the fellow traveller or companion (the word applies to singular and plural); the spouse. Al-murtafaq: everything one uses and benefits from. In the Noble Revelation: '... on thrones whereon they recline. Fair is the reward, and fair a resting place (murtafaq)' (Al-Kahf, 30-31), that is: Paradise is a fair reward for their deeds, and a fair station and abode. Firm, lasting wealth. Al-marfaq, al-marfiq: variants of the same term, the kasrah vowel of the mim (mirfaq) being the most classical. Al-mirfaq: that by which one is gentle, benefits, and seeks aid. In the Noble Quran: '... wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows (marafiq)' (Al-Ma'idah, 6) (plural: marafiq). The mirfaq of a house and the like: everything enjoyed therein: kitchen, privy, water source. The joint where the forearm meets the arm (the elbow); hence the word of Allah, the Most High, quoted above. That on which one leans and reclines. According to the Hanafis: it is the accessory right (haqq) attached to the thing sold, without which one cannot do, and which is sought only for its sake, such as the road and the watering right of a land; or: the appurtenances of a house: its benefits.
