📖 2 min readThe woman 'mubaghatan, baghyan': to take her by surprise. Al-baghy: exceeding the limit. Excess in raising the voice; al-Azhari said: that one raise his voice imitating the speech of tyrants, the arrogant, and the reckless. Al-Mawardi said al-baghy is bombast in speech and wrangling. Arrogance and self-inflation. Rebellion against the law. Corruption; one says the wound 'healed upon corruption (bari'a al-jarh 'ala baghy)' when healing ends in corruption. Envy; in the Qur'an: 'none disputed in it save those given it after the clear proofs came to them, in rivalry (baghyan) among them' (al-Baqara, 213). Injustice; in the Qur'an: 'God commands justice, excellence, and giving to kin, and He forbids indecency, wrong, and rebellion (al-baghy); He admonishes you, that you may remember' (an-Nahl, 90). Error. Disobedience; in the Qur'an: 'O people, your rebellion (baghyukum) is against yourselves' (Yunus, 23). In the Law: withholding obedience from one whose imamate is established without disobedience on his part, by overpowering, even by interpretation (Ibn 'Arafa). Customarily: seeking what is not lawful through tyranny and wrong (al-Haskafi).
