📖 2 min readWater among the trees, ghala: to permeate them and flow through. So-and-so's sight: it strayed from correctness. Into the thing: to enter it. So-and-so: to place the shackle (ghull) upon his hand or neck. Al-ghilala: to wear it beneath the clothes. So-and-so is ghallul: he betrayed in the spoils or the state's wealth; in the Quran: "Whoever defrauds (yaghlul) shall bring what he defrauded on the day of resurrection" (Al 'Imran 3:161). His breast, ghala or ghalila: he is given to deceit, rancor and hatred. The man: thirst of the most extreme. His hand: withheld from spending; he is ghallil and maghlul; in the Quran: "The Jews said: Allah's hand is shackled! Shackled be their hands, and cursed be they for what they said; nay, His two hands are outstretched, He spends as He wills" (al-Ma'ida 5:64); His saying "shackled be their hands" is a curse upon them; hence miserliness, envy, cowardice and abasement are great among them.
With light ghayn: masdar of ghalla: rancor (English glosses: envy, secret hatred).
With kasra: deceit and rancor; with damma: a collar of iron or copper set on the neck or the hand.
