📖 3 min readThe marking of the sacrificial animal (ish'ar al-hadi): according to the mass of scholars, ancients and later: to pierce the right side of the camel's hump while it faces the qiblah, then smear it with blood and stain it with it, so that it may be known that it is a sacrificial animal (hady) (al-Nawawi). According to the Malikis, and in one view of the Hanafis: it is done on the left side of the hump. In the view of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, Ibn 'Umar, the Malikis and the Shafi'is, and one view of the Hanafis and Hanbalis: it is not specific to the camel alone, but includes cattle (the cow) as well. Ash-shi'ar: what covers the human body as opposed to clothing; the sign; the pilgrimage: its rites and markers, or the landmarks to which Allah has recommended adherence or commanded performance. Ash-sha'r: what grows on the body that is neither wool nor camel hair, of man and others; the singular is sha'rah (plural: ash'ar, shu'ur). Ash-shi'r: knowledge; one says: would that I knew (layta shi'ri): would that I knew; measured, rhymed speech in the manner of the qasidah. In the Noble Quran: 'We did not teach him poetry, nor does it befit him. It is but a reminder and a clear Quran' (Ya-Sin, 69). Ash-sha'irah: that to which the Law recommends and commands adherence (plural: sha'a'ir). In the Noble Book: 'Whoever honours the sacred rites of Allah, it stems from the piety of hearts' (Al-Hajj, 32); the budnah (cow led as offering) and the like led as offerings to the Sacred House of Allah. In the Noble Quran: 'O you who believe! Do not violate the sacred rites of Allah, nor the sacred month, nor the offerings, nor the garlands, nor those repairing to the Sacred House seeking bounty and pleasure from their Lord' (Al-Ma'idah, 2); the sign; hence: the rites of the pilgrimage (sha'a'ir al-hajj): its traces and markers; it has been said: everything of its deeds, such as the standing, the tawaf, the sa'y, the casting of stones and other.
