One also says a tuf (by inversion and assimilation). With wa: tatawaffa. In the Quran: [al-Baqara, 158: 'Al-Safa and al-Marwa are among the rites of Allah: whoever makes pilgrimage to the House or performs the 'umra commits no wrong in going between them; and whoever volunteers good, Allah is thankful and knowing.']. Tawwaf: intensive of ta fa. Al-ta'ifa: the group, the party. In the Quran: [an-Nur, 2: 'The adulteress and the adulterer: flog each of them with a hundred lashes, and let not compassion for the two seize you concerning the religion of Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day; and let a group of the believers witness their punishment.']. Ibn Abbas, Mujahid and Ahmad said: al-ta'ifa means one man and more. Ata' and Ishaq said: two and more. Al-Zuhri said: three persons and more; this is an opinion attributed to al-Shafi'i. Malik said: four or more; this is also an opinion attributed to al-Shafi'i. Qatada said: Allah commanded that a group of the believers witness their punishment, that is, a number of Muslims, so that it may be an exhortation, a warning and an exemplary punishment. Of a thing: the portion that applies to the small as well as to the large number. Al-tawaf: the going round a thing on its sides. According to the Law: the going round the Sacred House.
