  1. What is the noon saakinah?
    View the answer elements

The noon saakinah is the noon free of any vowel, established in pronunciation and in writing, in connected speech and in pausing. It occurs in nouns, verbs and particles, and can be medial or final. It can be original, belonging to the construction of the word, as in "أنعم"; or added to the root of the word, as in "فانفلق".

  2. Define the tanween, state its mark, and give the ruling on pausing on it.
    View the answer elements

The tanween is an added noon saakinah that attaches to the end of the noun in pronunciation and in connected speech, and from which it differs in writing and in pausing. Its mark: two fathahs, or two kasrahs, or two dammahs. In pausing: the two fathahs are always substituted by an alif, unless they occur on a haa of femininity; as for the two dammahs and the two kasrahs, the tanween is dropped from them and one pauses with a sukoon, except in وَكَأَيِّنْ where this occurred, for they wrote it with a noon.

  3. Clarify the difference between the noon saakinah and the tanween.
    View the answer elements

The difference lies in five points: the noon saakinah is an original letter among the letters of the alphabet (or one of the added letters), while the tanween can only be added; the noon saakinah is established in pronunciation and in writing, the tanween in pronunciation without the writing; the noon saakinah is established in connected speech and in pausing, the tanween in connected speech without pausing; the noon saakinah occurs in nouns, verbs and particles, the tanween occurs in nouns alone; lastly the noon saakinah can be medial and final, while the tanween can only be final.

  4. State the positions where the noon of light emphasis occurred in the Quran, then clarify whether it is called noon saakinah or tanween, with the justification of what you say.
    View the answer elements

The noon of light emphasis (noon at-tawkeed al-khafeefah) occurred in only two positions in the Quran: وَلِيَكُونًا مِنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ and لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ. It is a noon and not a tanween, because of its attachment to the verb; and although it is not established in writing nor in pausing like the tanween, it is thus a noon saakinah resembling the tanween.
