Qisas (retaliation): inflicting upon the offender the like of what he committed, life for life, wound for wound; in the Qur'an: 'in retaliation (al-qisas) there is life for you, O people of understanding, that you may be God-fearing' (al-Baqara, 179). Al-qassa: plaster; 'A'isha, Mother of the Believers, said: 'do not hasten until you see the white qussa,' meaning by it purity from menstruation. Abu 'Ubayd said: its meaning is that the cotton or cloth the woman uses come out like a qussa (plaster) untouched by yellowness; it was said the intent is cleanliness from any trace of blood, and seeing the qussa is a likeness of that. A white fluid the womb pushes out when menstruation ceases: this is Malik's interpretation. Al-muqassa: a verbal noun. With the Malikis: offsetting: cancelling your money owed your creditor in return for the like of it he owes you, with its conditions.
From iqtasa: enabling the creditor to take his monetary right from the debtor. (To set off.) Making the two creditors mutually indebted to each other.
