📖 2 min readThe public road (al-tariq al-'amm): according to the Hanafis, the thoroughfare (nafidh); it is of two kinds: a) the street of the quarter (shari' al-mahallah): that in which passage is chiefly by its inhabitants, though it may also be by others; b) the great street (ash-shari' al-a'zam): that in which the passage of the crowd is equal. At-tariqah: the school (madhhab); one says: so-and-so remained upon a single tariqah: that is, a single state. Plural: tara'iq. In the Noble Quran: 'There are among us the righteous, and others below that: we were divided ways (tara'iq qidadan)' (Al-Jinn, 11), that is: multiple, differing ways, scattered opinions. Ibn 'Abbas and Mujahid said: among us the believer, among us the unbeliever. The tariqah of a people: their counterparts and their best; one says: this man is of the tariqah of his people: their most accomplished man. In the Noble Book: '... the most accomplished of them will say: you remained only a day' (Ta-Ha, 104), that is: the wise, complete one among them. According to the Hanafis: the way proper to those journeying to Allah, the Most High, consisting in traversing the stages and ascending the stations.
