Definition Mujtahid

Mujtahid according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

He who possesses the knowledge of the Book and the faces of its meanings, and the knowledge of the Sounna with its chains, texts and faces of meanings, and who is sound in qiyas, knowing the people’s custom.

Mujtahid according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

From ijtihad; knowing him is easy once ijtihad is known. His formal definition: he who possesses the Book’s knowledge and the faces of its meanings, and the Sounna’s knowledge with its chains, texts and faces of meanings, and is learned in qiyas.

Mujtahid according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

Adult, sound of mind, endowed with a faculty grasping the sciences, a jurist of himself, knowing the rational argument, of middle degree in language, arabism, usul and rhetoric; knowing the sources of rulings from Book and Sounna even without memorizing texts; and to gauge his ijtihad one weighs his case experience, the abrogating and abrogated, causes of revelation, the narrators’ state, and the other roots established in usul.

Mujtahid according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

Adult, sound of mind, endowed with a faculty reaching the sciences, a jurist of himself, knowing the rational argument, of middle degree in language and arabism.

Mujtahid according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

He who possesses the Book’s knowledge and the faces of its meanings, and the Sounna’s knowledge with its chains and texts.
