📖 1 min readThe Hidden is one of the 99 beautiful names of Allah. Its meaning: The One whom the senses cannot grasp and whose essence eludes creation.
To pronounce the name The Hidden in Arabic, we say: Al-Batin.
It is written in Arabic: الباطن.
From the Arabic root ب-ط-ن (b-t-n, inwardness and concealment), بَاطِن (batin) is the active participle فَاعِل, the hidden one beyond perception.
The Name “The Hidden” means: The One whom the senses cannot grasp and whose essence eludes creation. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
Meditating on this Name calls the believer to raise aspiration above the passions while remaining humble toward creation. Knowledge of the Name thereby becomes worship, refinement of character, and trust in Allah alone.
