al-Aswad ibn Rabi'ah

s: Al-Aswad ibn Rabi'ah was added by Abū Mūsá to Ibn al-Mundah, and said: Sif ibn 'Umar narrated from Warqā' ibn 'Abd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥanẓalī, who said: Al-Aswad ibn Rabi'ah, one of Banū Rabi'ah ibn Mālik ibn Ḥanẓalah, came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and said: What brought you here?, he replied: I came to seek closeness to Your companionship, so he was called Al-Muqtab, and he accompanied the Prophet ﷺ and witnessed the Battle of Ṣiffīn with 'Alī, as reported by Ibn Shāhin. One of the two translations seems to be incorrect, as I see it, and this concludes Abū Mūsá's statement.

Abū Mūsá mentioned this biography and made this Al-Aswad the one called Al-Muqtab, and mentioned Al-Aswad ibn 'Abbās, which will be mentioned, God willing, and called him: Al-Muqtab. Al-Ṭabarī mentioned that 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb appointed Al-Aswad ibn Rabi'ah, one of Banū Rabi'ah ibn Mālik, to lead the army of Basra, and he was a ṣaḥābī muhājirī, who said to the Prophet ﷺ: I came to seek closeness to Allāh by accompanying you, and thus he was called Al-Muqtab.
