Biography of Al-Harith ibn As-Samah

Al-Harith ibn As-Simma ibn Amr ibn Utayk ibn Amr ibn Amir, and his nickname was: Mubdhul ibn Malik ibn An-Najjar Al-Ansari Al-Khazraji, then Al-Najari, known as: Abu Sa'd, the father of his son Sa'd.

He was a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who had paired him with Suhayb ibn Sinan, and he was among those who marched with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Badr. He broke his spear, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned it to him, and he struck him with his spear and gave him a reward. He witnessed the Battle of Uhud with him, and he stood firm with him that day. He killed Utbah ibn Abd Allah ibn Al-Mughira, and took his armor, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him the armor. On that day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not give the armor to anyone else. He pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on his death, and then he witnessed the Well of Ma'unah. He and Amr ibn Umayyah were in the Serah, and they saw the birds gathering over their homes, so they went to them, and they found their companions killed, so he said to Amr: What do you see? He said: I see that I should join the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Al-Harith said: I would not delay joining the place where the Munthir was killed, so he set out until he joined the people, and he fought until he was killed.

Abd Allah ibn Abu Bakr said: They did not kill him until they thrust their spears into him, and they tied him up with them until he died. Amr ibn Umayyah was taken captive, then released, and it is said: that Al-Harith was mentioned by the poet on the Day of Badr:

Oh Lord, Al-Harith ibn As-Simma … is a man of true loyalty and a man of true blame

He went out in his duties, confused … in a dark night, confused

He guides the Prophet, a guide to the nation … seeking paradise in what he has

It is said: that Ali ibn Abu Talib recited these verses on the Day of Uhud.

Zuhri, Musa ibn Uqba, and Ibn Ishaq mentioned that he witnessed Badr, broke his spear, returned, and mentioned Uraha, and Zuhri said that he was killed on the Day of the Well of Ma'unah.

Ma'mun ibn Labid narrated, he said: Al-Harith ibn As-Simma said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me on the Day of Uhud, while he was in the Shu'bah, so he said: Have you seen Abd Allah ibn Umar? I said: Yes, I saw him near the Jebel, and the polytheists had camped with him, so I went to him to prevent him, and I saw you, so I returned to you, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The angels are preventing him, Al-Harith said: So I returned to Abd Allah ibn Umar, and I found seven arrows in front of him, so I said: I have taken your right hand, have you killed these people? He said: As for this one, it is for Arta'ah ibn Sharhbil, and these two, I killed them, and as for these, I killed them, but I do not know who killed them.

I said: Allah and His Messenger are truthful.
