Al-Harith ibn Durrar

Al-Harith ibn Dharar, also known as Ibn Abi Dharar Al-Khuzai Al-Mustalqi.

He is known as: Abu Malik, and he is from the people of Hijaz.

Abd al-Wahhab ibn Abi Habba informed us, in his chain of transmission, from Abdullah ibn Ahmad, who said that his father told him that he heard Al-Harith ibn Abi Dharar say:

I came to the Messenger of Allah and he called me to Islam. I entered into it and accepted it. He called me to zakat, and I accepted it. I said to him: O Messenger of Allah, I will return to my people and invite them to Islam and to pay zakat. If any of them responded to me, I will collect their zakat and send it to you. The Messenger of Allah would then send me a man, such as Iban, to bring me the zakat that I had collected. When Al-Harith collected the zakat from those who had responded to him, and the man that the Messenger of Allah had intended to send to him had not arrived, the Messenger of Allah detained him. Al-Harith thought that there had been a displeasure from Allah and His Messenger, so he called his companions and said to them:

Indeed, the Messenger of Allah had appointed a time for me to send a man to me, so that he could take from me the zakat that I had collected, and it is not from the Messenger of Allah to be late. I do not think that the Messenger of Allah detained him except due to displeasure. So, let us go and meet the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah then sent Al-Waleed ibn Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ait to Al-Harith to take from him the zakat that he had collected. When Al-Waleed set out and had traveled some of the road, he broke his camel's leg and returned to the Messenger of Allah. He said: O Messenger of Allah, Al-Harith has refused to give me the zakat and intended to kill me. The Messenger of Allah then cancelled the mission to Al-Harith and Al-Harith came with his companions, meeting the Messenger of Allah as he was leaving Medina. When Al-Harith approached them, he said: To whom have you been sent? They said: To you. He said: Why? They said: The Messenger of Allah had sent Al-Waleed ibn Uqba to you, but he returned to him, and he claimed that you had refused to give him the zakat and intended to kill him. Al-Harith said: No, by the one who sent Muhammad with the truth, I did not see him, and he did not come to me. When Al-Harith entered upon the Messenger of Allah, he said to him: You refused to give the zakat and intended to kill my Messenger? Al-Harith said: No, by the one who sent you with the truth, I did not see him, and he did not come to me. I only came when the Messenger of Allah detained me, fearing that there was a displeasure from Allah, the Exalted, and His Messenger.

Then came down the verses: O you who believe, if a wrongdoer comes to you with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance, then be regretful over what you have done.
