Ja'il ibn Ziyad al-Ashjayi

Ja'el b. Ziyad al-Ashja'i was a Kufan Companion, and it was said: Ja'el, who had been mentioned earlier.

This is how Ibn Mandah named him, whereas Abu 'Umar and Abu Na'im did not attribute him to a specific tribe, but said: Ja'el al-Ashja'i.

He was narrated from by 'Abd Allah b. Abi al-Ja'd, the brother of Salim.

We were informed by Abu al-Faraj b. Abi al-Rajaa', through his chain of transmission to Abu Bakr b. Abi 'Asim, who said: Our companion, al-Hasan b. 'Ali, informed us, Zayd b. al-Hubab informed us, Rafi' b. Salama b. Ziyad b. Abi al-Ja'd informed us, 'Abd Allah b. Abi al-Ja'd informed me, from Ja'el al-Ashja'i, who said: I went out with the Prophet ﷺ on one of his expeditions, and I was on a weak horse, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with me and said: 'Go ahead, O companion of the horse!' I said: O Messenger of Allah, this horse is weak, he said: He raised a cloth that was with him, and struck it with it, and said: O Allah, bless it for him, and he said: I saw you, Messenger of Allah, with the head of the horse in front of the people, and I sold it for twelve thousand dirhams.

Ibn Makula said: As for Ja'el, with a jamm on the ja', a fat-ha on the 'ayn, and a sukun on the ya' with two dots below it, he is Ja'el al-Ashja'i, from the Prophet ﷺ who said: And it was said: Ja'el, which is a correct reading.
