Biography of Sawad ibn Qarb

Suwad ibn Qarib al-Azdi al-Dusi, as stated by Ibn al-Kalbi, and Sa'id ibn Jubayr, and Ibn Abi Khaythama said: He was a Sudoosi from the Banu Sudoos.

He was a priest in the pre-Islamic era, had companionship, and was a poet.

Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali, said: Suwad ibn Qarib al-Sudoosi entered upon Umar ibn al-Khattab, and said to him: O Suwad, have you composed anything good today from your poetry? He said: Glory be to Allah, and by Allah, I have not greeted any of my companions with the greeting I greeted you with.

Umar said: Glory be to Allah, O Suwad, our polytheism was not greater than your poetry, and by Allah, O Suwad, I have heard a story about you, it is pleasing, so tell it to him.

He said: I was a priest in the pre-Islamic era, and while I was sleeping one night, my soul came to me, and struck me with his foot, and said to me: O Suwad, listen to what I say to you, I said: Come, and he said:
